Candle Wick Too Big or Too Small? How to Recognize the Difference

Candle Wick Too Big or Too Small? How to Recognize the Difference

Your candle isn't burning the way you expected.

Now you're wondering:

Is my candle wick too big or too small?

It's tempting to diagnose your candle from one thing you see.

Small melt pool?

Wick must be too small.

Large melt pool?

Wick must be too big.

But candle behavior isn't always that simple.

What Happens When Your Wick Is Too Small?

A candle that appears under-wicked may show signs such as a smaller flame or wax remaining around the sides of the container.

That's often when makers immediately move to a larger wick.

But before changing anything, remember:

What you're seeing is an observation—not automatically a diagnosis.

You still need to understand why your particular candle is behaving that way.

What Happens When Your Wick Is Too Big?

On the other side, an oversized wick can produce more aggressive burn behavior.

You may notice changes in the flame, melt pool, carbon buildup or heat generated by the candle.

This is why simply increasing wick size until all the wax melts can create another problem.

You solved what you could see...

but potentially changed something else.

Your Candle Can Change as It Burns

Another mistake is deciding that a wick works after observing only the beginning of the candle.

Your candle doesn't remain under exactly the same conditions throughout its entire life.

Its behavior can change as it burns farther down the container.

So a candle that looks beautiful initially isn't automatically a validated candle.

Don't Diagnose From One Symptom

This is the principle I want candle makers to remember:

One observation should not become your entire diagnosis.

Tunneling is information.

A large flame is information.

Mushrooming is information.

Your melt pool is information.

The skill is learning how those observations fit together.

That's where science becomes far more useful than guesswork.

Are You Developing Candles to Sell?

If you've been moving between wick sizes but still aren't confident that your candle is actually ready to sell, you don't necessarily need more random tests.

You need a system for understanding the tests you're already running.

That's what I teach inside my Candle Science Systems Program.
