Candle Tunneling: Why a Bigger Wick May Not Be the Fix

Candle Tunneling: Why a Bigger Wick May Not Be the Fix

Your candle is tunneling.

There is wax left around the sides of the jar, so the answer seems obvious:

“I need a bigger wick.”

You size up.

The melt pool gets wider. The wax around the sides disappears.

Problem solved?

Maybe not.

Removing the symptom doesn't mean you solved the problem.

What Your Candle Is Actually Showing You

Tunneling is something you can see.

But what you see on the surface is only part of what is happening while your candle burns.

When you change the wick, you aren't only changing how far the wax melts across the jar.

You're changing the way the candle burns.

That can change how heat moves through the candle, how the melt pool develops, and how the candle behaves over time.

So a candle that no longer tunnels isn't automatically a candle that is performing correctly.

And this is where many makers get stuck.

They solve the problem they can see, without realizing their change may have affected something else.

Candle Testing Is More Than Watching the Melt Pool

Candle making isn't about changing ingredients until the candle looks right.

It's about understanding what your materials are doing and knowing how to read the results of your testing.

That difference matters.

Because if every problem leads to:

“Maybe I'll try a bigger wick.”

“Maybe I'll change the wax.”

“Maybe I'll change the fragrance percentage.”

you're collecting tests without necessarily collecting useful information.

Testing gives you data. Understanding that data gives you direction.

That's the part that turns candle making from guesswork into science.

The Real Question Isn't “How Do I Stop Tunneling?”

A better question is:

“Why is my candle behaving this way?”

Those are two very different questions.

One sends you looking for a quick fix.

The other makes you understand the candle before deciding what needs to change.

And that skill becomes even more important when you're trying to turn candle making into a profitable business.

Ready to Stop Guessing?

If you feel like you're constantly changing wicks, waxes, fragrances, or processes without being completely sure why you're making those changes, there may be a gap between making candles and truly understanding them.

That's what I help candle makers close.

I teach a science, data, and process-based approach so you can make decisions with more confidence and build a candle business on something more reliable than trial and error.

If you're ready to stop guessing and start building your candle business with science, data, and repeatable processes, let's talk.
