Candle Glass Safety: A Beautiful Jar Is Only the Beginning
You find the perfect jar. The colour fits your brand, the shape looks premium, and you can already imagine your label on it.
But before asking, “Will this look good?” there is another question worth asking:
“What evidence do I have that this glass is suitable for a candle?”
Your customer will do more than photograph your candle. They will light it in their home.
Not every glass container is a candle vessel
Wine glasses, drinking glasses and decorative jars can be appealing design choices. That does not automatically make them suitable for holding a burning candle.
Candle-container glass has specific performance considerations. ASTM F2179 addresses glass produced for filled candles, including requirements relating to thermal shock and annealing. This is why intended use and supplier documentation matter—not just the appearance of the jar. ASTM International
Start with three simple questions
Was this vessel made for candle use?
Ask your supplier rather than relying on a product photo or another maker’s example.
Is the glass in good condition?
Do not overlook chips, cracks or visible damage because the jar still looks usable.
Have I evaluated the finished candle?
Choosing a vessel is only part of developing your product. Your wick, wax, fragrance and container need to be considered together.
These questions do not replace testing. They help you recognise where more information is needed.
Safety continues after the candle is sold
How a candle is used also matters. Clear care instructions should remind customers never to leave it unattended, never to extinguish it with water, and not to burn a container candle all the way down. The National Candle Association advises stopping when half an inch of wax remains. National Candle Association
A beautiful candle starts with informed decisions
Choosing a jar is one decision. Understanding how your vessel, wick, wax and fragrance work together is where thoughtful product development begins.
This is the approach I teach in my Candle Science Systems Program—helping makers move beyond trial and error towards a more structured, science-based process.
If you’re developing candles and feel unsure about your next step, we can talk about where you are, what you want to achieve, and whether the program is a good fit.
